Depending on the material, this might not be necessary. For stone that has more surface "tooth", or more easily accepts oil stains, this is a nice workaround to hubby.

One of the sealers I use will actually prevent oil stains in many granites, but the protection doesn't depend on polymer or silicone, so the surface can still get grimy looking over time, and be harder to clean, unless the top is periodically resealed with a more typical type of sealer. I find my customers who I take care of in this way tend to be happier with their husbands , er, I mean granite.
